Last year it was in the 70's on this date. Instead, we have snow in the forecast through at least Thursday.  / upnorthlive

NORTHERN MICHIGAN -- Last March 18th, Traverse City and Pellston were sitting in the 80's as a record shattering warm up brought unheard of March warmth to Northern Michigan. This year we are about as far from that as possible with snow in the forecast along with temperatures a good 15-20 degrees below normal.

Low pressure and it's associated frontal boundary are crossing Northern Michigan Tuesday leading to snow with a few inches falling as of Tuesday morning. The highest totals so far were found at Honor in Benzie County where 6.6" of snow fell. Alpena, Raber, and Interlochen all saw over 4" of snow Monday night into Tuesday morning.

With the spring season officially arriving at 7:02 a.m. Eastern Time Wednesday morning, it will not really feel like it. A push of unseasonably cold air will race across Lakes Superior/Michigan leading to rounds of lake effect snow at times which will be with us through at least Thursday early afternoon. It will not snow all day, and it will not snow in all areas, but over a couple day period, the typical snowbelts downwind of the Great Lakes could see 4-7" of snow with the center of highest snow totals centered on Antrim County including Mancelona, Alba, and Elmira.

Drier air and moderating temperatures will take a toll on the lake effect snow by late Thursday with it coming to an end. Sunshine and somewhat warmer temperatures return Friday into the upcoming weekend with a few spots getting back to near 40F.
