NORTHERN MICHIGAN -- Heavy snow still on target for parts of Northern and Central Lower Michigan later Thursday through Thursday night.
A push of warmer air overnight touched off snow early Thursday with 1-4" falling across Northern Michigan by mid-morning Thursday.
The main storm system that will bring additional snowfall to "some" parts of our viewing area is still in Iowa as of Thursday morning. That will cross over Illinois into Northern Ohio by early Friday sweeping along it's northern flank snow, some of which will be heavy Thursday night along/south of highway M-55.
With the latest guidance/data coming in, expectations are for the heaviest snow to fall across Central Lower Michigan with lighter snowfall north. Places such as Houghton Lake, West Branch, Clare, Mt. Pleasant, Big Rapids and others will see a general 5-10" of snowfall by Friday morning.
Meanwhile, with the track of this system further south from yesterdays forecasts, locations north will see lesser snowfall with 2-4" amounts from Manistee to Traverse City/Grayling, over to Alpena. The Eastern U.P./Straits region will see even less with 1-2" likely through Friday morning. Even locations around Grand Rapids/Lansing will see potential heavy snow if you have travels south.
Sunshine returns to the area later Friday and into the start of the weekend.
