Tree companies and power crews are busy cleaning up after damaging storms hit the northern Michigan Monday night.

Heavy rainfall, lightning and strong winds caused damage into Tuesday morning. The 7&4 Storm Team reports a significant number of large trees fell in Cheboygan County. The area hardest hit was near the intersection of Mullet Burt Road and East Burt Lake Road just outside Indian River.

Wind gusts were reported to be as high as 62mph in Emmet County and around 53mph in Grand Traverse County. The Emmet-Cheboygan-Charlevoix Emergency Response Team is reporting straight line winds that are estimated to have hit homes around 70-80 miles per hour.

Since the beginning of the storm, Consumers Energy reported 66,500 homes without power throughout the state.  As of Tuesday at 9:45am 28,300 were still without power.

The hardest hit areas include Newaygo County where 4,920 people are still without power.  Cheboygan County has 391 without power.

Consumers Energy expects everyone to be back up by midnight, but some in the hardest hit areas may still be without power until Wednesday.

Cherryland Electric had about 1500 people without power Monday night, everyone is expected to be fully restored Tuesday morning.
