TRAVERSE CITY -- The first major snowfall of the season had many people getting a quick lesson in winter driving.
Police and tow-truck drivers were kept busy trying to clear the way after the slick roads sent dozens into ditches.
Many of those stuck in traffic were students trying to get to school. Just outside Traverse City at Zimmerman and North Long Lake, school buses were having trouble on the roads. One bus was sent in a ditch, another was stuck trying to get up the hill on Zimmerman Road.
According to 7&4 Storm Team Meteorologist, Joe Charlevoix, the warm temperatures on the ground caused the snow to melt when it hit the roadway, which created a layer of ice.
As far as the snow totals as of 8:45 a.m., Traverse City is at about 1.5 to 2 inches. In parts of Leelanau County, including where 7&4's studio is located the snow total is around 3 to 4 inches. Parts of the Upper Peninsula can expect up to 10-inches of snowfall throughout the day.
