GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- The mild winter is not going stop hundreds of cross-country skiers planning to participate in the VASA this weekend after all. A final decision has been made by organizers to hold the race.

The 36th Annual North American Vasa runs Feb. 10 - Feb. 12.  For the past couple of weeks, organizers of one of the country's most popular races have been keeping close tabs on the weather forecast and the trails.

Volunteers have also had a major hand in keeping the race course snow covered.  Saturday about 70 people met on the Vasa armed with shovels, sleds, and snow throwers.  Tuesday morning dozens more made an effort to make sure the race will go on as planned.

As of Monday evening, organizers posted on the Vasa website that despite the warm spell, the races should be able to start this weekend. Skiers testing the trails reported they were in good shape with icy and fast conditions

The Vasa brought more than 700 racers from 18 states and three foreign countries in 2011.
