TRAVERSE CITY -- "Anybody can request anything and I can turn it into a cake," said cake artist Jessica Costales.
Jessica Costales is the Owner of Cherry Bay Cakery in Traverse City. She started her business in January but has been designing cakes for years.
"I just started using fondant just a few years ago," Costales said. "It was all butter cream for like the last 10 to 12 years."
Costales said her expertise is in 3D fondant cakes, much like the ones you would see on the hit shows, Cake Boss" or "Ace of Cakes".
"My average birthday cake takes about 20 to 25 hours to put together, well it's not just your average birthday cake," Costales said.
Costales said she makes about 15 cakes per year. While it may not sound like much, once you see how much work goes into many of them you'll know why.
She made a cake replica of a Harry Potter Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for her daughter's 18th birthday.
"It was almost like putting a puzzle together, it took about 100 hours," Costales said.
Her daughter was so impressed with the cake she refused to eat it.
A recent cake she made was for a friend's surprise birthday party and it took her about a month to make it.
"It's easier to create more detailed things with fondant than with butter cream," Costales said.
The price of Costales' cakes varies depending on what the customer wants and how much detail is involved.
