MECOSTA CO. -- One man was shot on Monday night outside the Department of Human Services office in Mecosta County.

The Big Rapids Department of Safety said the 34-year-old Newaygo man was at a Family Team meeting at the DHS office when he left abruptly, walked to his car, retrieved his gun and shot himself in the hand.

His brother, who was also there, took the gun from him and called for help.

He was treated for injury and then lodged in the Mecosta County Jail.

No DHS staff members were hurt and officials say there were no specific threats made to any employees.
