Update Monday 4:30am: U.S. 31 in Grand Traverse County is back open Monday morning.  The highway was closed after a car involved in a chase crashed into a utility pole.

A portion of US-31 in Traverse City is closed after a car crashed into a utility pole Sunday night. An official at the scene tells 7&4 News the car was involved in a chase that started in Kalkaska after the driver of the car stole gas from a local gas station.

The car was traveling south on US 31 when it lost control and crashed into a utility pole, this was at around 7:00pm Sunday night. The crash caused several power lines to collapse and block the roadway.

7&4 News is told the man tried to run from the car after the crash but authorities were able to arrest him.

Emergency crews have shutd down US-31 North from Airport Access Road to Three Mile Road as they clean up the roadway. As of 9:50pm, Grand Traverse County Central Dispatchers say the road could be closed for another 2 to 5 hours.
