NEWAYGO CO. -- A snowmobiler was saved by bystanders after falling through the ice in Montcalm County.

It happened Saturday at 3:53pm on Crystal Lake.

David Johnson, 51, of Woodland, went through the ice in about 20 feet of water.  A rope was thrown by witnesses and pulled Johnson to safety.

Rescue crews called to the scene say Johnson was in the water for a few minutes.  He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Arrangements are being made to have the snowmobile brought up from the lake bottom.
