Woody Hansen wanted a fun hobby after he retired from teaching 20 years ago. He found that making maple syrup was a fun and easy way to have something to do that produced a sweet treat.

After maple syrup producers enjoyed an exceptional season, Forest Tent Caterpillars are attacking maple trees, removing their leaves. The impact of the caterpillars on the trees may not be significant this year, but if similar infestations occur next year and the following year, the damage will likely affect maple syrup production.

Making maple syrup depends largely on spring weather conditions. Producers say although there have been challenges, this season seems to be going well so far. Several maple syrup themed events are happening over the weekend.
