Meteor Over Emmet County

PETOSKEY/ALANSON -- While in the 7&4 Weather Center Wednesday morning, July 9th, I received an e-mail from a viewer in the Alanson area basically asking if we had any reports of a large meteor that crossed the Northern Michigan sky late the night of July 5th (Saturday night). I did have any reports called or e-mailed into the Weather Center, but I told Derek I would post his e-mail on our weather blog and see if anyone else perhaps saw it. If you did, send us a comment so we can share it with our viewers. Here is the e-mail "

Joe,

Good morning! I know occasionally the weather gurus at 7&4 discuss different types of phenomena that occur in the area...and I was curious if anyone had seen or talked about the meteor that flew over the other night (July 5th)

It was the first time I'd ever seen one like it...it was incredibly bright and had a long red tail. It lit up the ground as it passed over our yard!

We live about 5 miles NW of Alanson...and a friend saw it flying over in Petoskey.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had mentioned it or if there was any news on where it had landed.

Thanks!

Derek
