MESICK, MI -- The air is warming. The ground is thawing. And maple syrup production is underway in northern Michigan.

At the Sugar Den in Mesick, production started on Saturday. Owner Dennis Sparks has been making maple syrup for more than 30 years.

"I Started making syrup in 1973 right here in these woods," Sparks said.

His syrup is sold all across the county. This year, he hopes to produce 1,200 gallons. The quality and quantity depends on the weather.

"As far as the rest of the season goes, there is no way of knowing. If we get some freezing weather and warm days, we'll make syrup. If it warms up and gets into the 60s and 70s, season could be over," said Sparks.
