LANSING (AP) -- Farmers and others who lost money because of Michigan crop failures last year have until the end of this month to seek loans under a state relief program.
Fruit growers and processors were hit especially hard by the early thaw and late freeze last spring.
Under a law enacted in 2012, those with qualified losses are eligible for 1 percent loans of up to $400,000 for individual farmers, $800,000 for individual processors and handlers, and $1 million for processors with multiple locations.
The loans come from private lenders, who determine eligibility based on the percentage of loss to the producer or processor. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says arrangements with lenders must be completed by March 31.
