LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is extending the public comment period for plans it has developed to manage nearly 4 million acres of state forest land.

The DNR has put together blueprints for the eastern Upper Peninsula, western Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula. They were crafted with suggestions from representatives of government agencies, outdoor recreation enthusiasts, the forest products industry and other interests.

Officials say the plans will provide long-term guidance to DNR managers who decide how the forests are used.

Forest Resources Division chief Bill O'Neill said Thursday the public comment period was scheduled to end Jan. 2. But after receiving many requests for more time, he's postponing the deadline to March 8.

Following the comment period, the DNR will write final versions of the plan.
