SUTTONS BAY -- Our UpNorthLive Facebook fans voted to hear more about one of Northern Michigan's growing industries.

More and more hopps farmers are popping up in Northern Michigan.

Doug Periard, owner of Suttons Bay Hopps, tells 7&4 News that this is their third year of production and the plants are growing well.

He says right now Michigan only grows about 100 acres of hopps, but the state could support much more.

"I think the biggest thing in Northern Michigan is we need to see if we can grow them so that it's cost effective and we can make money off it," Periad said.

He says they are not thinking too much about expansion until they can be sure that it would be cost effective.
