Feds poisoning lamprey in Muskegon River system

MUSKEGON, MI (AP) --       MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees
is poisoning Muskegon River tributaries in coming days to rid them
of larvae from invasive sea lamprey.
      The aim is to attack larvae burrowed into the stream bottoms of
Cedar Creek and Brooks Creek in Muskegon County.
      State permits allow the applications of Lampricid and Bayluscide
between Tuesday and Aug. 26, but officials tell The Muskegon
Chronicle their aim is to start Wednesday and finish within three
days.
      Adult sea lamprey are eel-like parasites that attach themselves
to fish. They first entered the western Great Lakes in the 1920s
through the Welland Canal near Niagara Falls.
      Lamprey have heavily damaged stocks of trout and other native
fish species.
