EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan State football team has
started practice for the 2009 season with wide-open competition at
quarterback and running back.
Kirk Cousins and Oklahoma transfer Keith Nichol are competing to
become the Spartans' starting quarterback. Coaches at Tuesday's
Michigan State media day say the competition is neck-and-neck and
the two players could continue to battle for the starting job after
the season begins.
Michigan State also must replace All-American running back Javon
Ringer.
Up to seven running backs including freshmen Edwin Baker and
Larry Caper are expected to compete for carries for the Spartans in
2009.
