With politicans expecting federal spending cuts to kick in as early as midnight tonight, senior citizens centers in northern Michigan are bracing for financial losses.
The Friendship Centers of Emmet County are expecting to lose nearly ten thousand dollars in funding.
In the last ten years, the senior population has grown almost 30 percent in Emmet County.
Each day at the Friendship Center, they feed around a hundred seniors and deliver dozens more meals to homebound seniors who are a part of the Meals on Wheels program.
Over the last year, the demand has gone up, but the funding hasn't and the Friendship Centers are already stretched thin financially.
Sug Engel, the Director of the Emmet County Friendship Centers says that once the automatic spending cuts take effect, the program will be forced to seek donations to help fill the void financially.
