EAST LANSING (AP) -- Two men from the Kalkaska Girls Basketball program have been inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame.
Royce Thomas and Steve Brower were inducted this past weekend in a ceremony in East Lansing.
Royce Thomas has been the assistant girls varsity coach, in addition to working with the boys program. Royce graduated from Kalkaska in 1976 as a three-time "athlete-of-the-year." Over the last 36 years, Royce and his wife, Terry, have continually donated money to help with the boys and girls program. Over ten years ago, Royce developed a golf outing to raise funds for Kalkaska Basketball. In his honor, the name was changed to the Royce Thomas Annual Blazer Basketball Outing, which has raised over $100,000 for the program.
Steve Brower is what Coach Dalton describes as the "best P.A. announcer in the state". The program from the event last weekend boasts "words cannot describe the excitement that Steve creates as an announcer for each game." Many former players have even had Steve announce their wedding parties at the wedding receptions. The program says, "When the lights go down in Kalkaska and the music starts up, it is Steve Brower magic time."
The BCAM Hall of Fame inducted the first members in 1985. The
purpose was to honor those coaches who had been successful for many
years. There are now over 100 coaches in the BCAM Hall of Fame. To
qualify for the Hall of Fame a coach must have coached Varsity/College
Head Basketball for 20 years or more and/or accumulated 300 or more
victories.
