ALLEN PARK, Mich.  - The Detroit Lions used to openly talk about potential draft picks.

      Not anymore.

Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew says the team has to be more careful with comments than it was when it had one of the top selections. Mayhew refuses to publicly pump up the reputation of any player he might want to take with the No. 23 pick overall on Thursday night.

The Lions have their lowest first-round pick since 1992, when they drafted defensive end Robert Porcher 26th overall. They're in unfamiliar territory in the draft after winning enough games to earn their first playoff appearance since the 1999 season.

Detroit desperately needs help at cornerback. Mayhew insists the team will take the top player available on its draft board unless he's a quarterback.
