HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut high school football coach has apologized for using an opponent's play list, which his team found during their game last month.
Southington coach D.J. Hernandez, a 24-year-old former University of Connecticut quarterback and wide receiver, was suspended for a game on Tuesday. He admitted using the list of coded plays from an armband lost by a Manchester High School player. Southington beat Manchester 28-14 on Oct. 22.
In an e-mail Wednesday, Hernandez says he realizes that he did not set a good example for his team, and promises to become a better coach.
The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference is expected to take up Manchester's formal protest of Hernandez's actions at a meeting on Nov. 18.
