DETROIT (AP) --
DETROIT (AP) - Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland says he
signed veteran forward Todd Bertuzzi because the team refuses to
concede next season will be a rebuilding one.
Bertuzzi signed a $1.5 million, 1-year contract Tuesday with
Detroit, where the 34-year-old played during the 2006-07 season.
The Red Wings fell one win short of repeating as Stanley Cup
champions in June, then lost Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson and
Tomas Kopecky to free agency.
Bertuzzi scored 15 goals and had 44 points last season for the
Calgary Flames, the sixth team he's played for since the New York
Islanders drafted him in 1993.
Holland says Bertuzzi's back problems appear to be in his past
and the team's medical staff was impressed with his condition
during a physical.
