NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie outfielder Fernando Martinez has been sent back to the minor leagues by the New York Mets.
The 20-year-old Martinez made his major league debut May 26. While he batted .291 for Triple-A Buffalo and led the International League with 25 extra-base hits, he hit just .194 (12 for 64) with five doubles and five RBIs in 18 games with the Mets.
The Mets brought up utilityman Nick Evans. He batted .276 with nine doubles and nine RBIs in 25 games with Double-A Binghamton and .093 with three homers and seven RBIs in 22 games with Buffalo.
Last year, Evans hit .257 with nine RBIs in 50 games with the Mets.
New York also claimed left-hander Arturo Lopez off waivers from San Diego and optioned him to Buffalo.
