ST. LOUIS (AP) - Tigers manager Jim Leyland has benched slumping
(AP) --
slugger Magglio Ordonez indefinitely.
The 35-year-old Ordonez is a six-time American League All-Star
with a .312 career average and seven 100-RBI seasons. He won the AL
batting title in 2007 with a .363 average.
This season, he's hitting .273 with two homers and 22 RBIs.
Leyland says he needed to make a move with the offense in a
tailspin. Detroit has scored three or fewer runs in seven straight
games.
Leyland says he'll try to avoid using Ordonez even as a pinch
hitter for a while. He says Ordonez doesn't know what's wrong with
his stroke.
Also today, the Tigers placed struggling left-hander Dontrelle
Willis on the 15-day disabled list with an anxiety disorder.
