CHEBOYGAN CO. -- 23-year-old Sean Bauers stood before a judge today and plead guilty to one count of first degree child abuse.

Bauers admitted to causing severe injuries to a one-year-old boy by shaking him.

The child has been hospitalized in Grand Rapids for nearly four months now. The Cheboygan County Prosecutor says the child may face serious health issues down the road. He also says the 15-month-old child is currently on a feeding tube and is under constant care.

Near the end of October, a sergeant with the Michigan State Police was dispatched to McLaren Northern Michigan's Cheboygan Campus for a complaint of suspected child abuse, according to a press release from the Cheboygan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Hospital personnel brought the sergeant to a one-year-old boy who was suffering from severe bruising, bleeding of the brain and broken ribs, the release says. It was determined that the injuries were so severe that the boy should be airlifted to Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Bauers will be sentenced on March 19th. He could face a maximum penalty of life in prison. The minimum sentence agreed upon in a plea bargain would make Bauers eligible for parole after 7 years in prison
