DETROIT -- A consistent, swirling wind could be felt by Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila all afternoon. The wind was generated by Pittsburgh bats as the Pirates struck out 17 times in a 4-3 loss to the Tigers.
Starter Max Scherzer accounted for 15 of those strikeouts, one off the Detroit record and the most by a Tigers hurler since Mickey Lolich whiffed 15 in 1972. Scherzer also allowed just four hits in seven innings, but the Tigers trailed 2-1 until Delmon Young hit an RBI single in the seventh before scoring on Avila's two-run single.
