GARFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A Traverse City man is dead after crashing his SUV into a utility pole Sunday afternoon.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office tells 7&4 News that it happened just before Noon on Silver Lake Road between Secor and Zimmerman Roads.

The driver, John Hagstrom Dopke lost control, veered off the roadway, hit a utility pole and flipped his SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash. The victim was not wearing a seat belt.
