While more than half of workers surveyed said they do swear it the office, it can cost you a big promotion.

According to a CareerBuilder.com survey,fifty-seven percent of employers said they'd be less likely to promote someone who swears in the office.

Employers cite swearing as one of the reasons for firing 38 percent of the time.

The survey, conducted this past summer, included more than 2,000 hiring managers and 3,800 workers across industries and company sizes.

The survey says over half (51 percent) of workers reported that they swear in the office. 95-percent said they do so in front of their co-workers, while 51-percent have admitted to swearing in front of their boss.

Workers were the least likely to use expletives in front of senior leaders, at 13-percent, and their clients, at 7-percent.

CareerBuilder.com says employers are inclined to think less of an employee who swears at work for a variety of reasons. 81-percent believe that the use of curse words makes the employee appear unprofessional. 71-percent say it shows a lack of control, and 68-percent say it shows a lack of maturity.

54-percent said swearing at work makes an employee appear less intelligent.

That being said, while many employers think less of an employee who curses too much in the office, one in four employers admitted to swearing at their employees.

And the age group most responsible for swearing at work? That would be employees age 35-44, where 58-percent say they swear at work.
