NEWBERRY, Mich. (AP) - Private forest owners affected by the Duck Lake wildfire in the Upper Peninsula are facing a deadline to sign up for public aid to restore their land.

Eligible landowners could receive up to 75 percent of the cost of their restoration plans if approved by the federal government. Officials are recommending people work with experts on a management plan.

The federal Farm Service Agency that serves Luce County must be contacted before Tuesday at (906) 632-9611.

A lightning strike is blamed for the Duck Lake wildfire in May. The fire destroyed 136 structures, including homes, outbuildings and campers, and temporarily closed Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
