SUTTONS BAY -- Thousands of people joined forces this weekend, trying to paddle their way into the record books for the Suttons Bay Floatilla.

Folks from all over northern Michigan and other states gathered at the Suttons Bay Marina Saturday morning to challenge a Guinness World Record for the largest raft of canoes and kayaks.

The current record is one 1,902 boats and was set last September in up-state New York.

Right now, the boaters will have to wait until Tuesday to get a final count. Organizers say a tally of 2,049 colorful kayaks and canoes has to be verified because during the "30 second count," a wind gust came causing some boaters to drift away. They want to make sure those people weren't counted twice.

The verification count will be taken by studying an aerial photo with magnifying glasses.

All the proceeds from the event will benefit the Suttons Bay School District.  Be to stay with 7&4 News, we'll tell you as soon as possible if they were able to set the new world record!
