Public input needed for Northern Michigan forest plans

The Department of Natural Resources will be hosting an open house to hear public input on proposed forest management treatments for the 2014.

The open house will discuss the management plan for Ogemaw and Roscommon counties.

Each year, DNR personnel inventory and evaluate one-tenth of the state forest. The information provides the DNR with knowledge of the health, quality and quantity of vegetation, wildlife and fisheries habitats, and other important pieces of information.

Proposed treatments include timber harvesting and replanting, among others.

Bill O'Neill, chief of the DNR's Forest Resources Division, said open houses are a good way for interested residents and stakeholders to learn about proposed treatment plans and to share input towards the final decisions.

"When it comes to the health and sustainability of our state forests, we're always thinking several years ahead," O'Neill said.

The open house will be held on September 12 from 3 to 7 pm at the DNR Field Office in Roscommon.
