A plan on consolidating the Village of Onekama and Onekama Township is finished.
ONEKAMA -- A plan to consolidate the Village of Onekama and Onekama Township to save taxpayers money has been completed. The plan still needs to be approved by the village, township and then by voters.
The plan was drafted up by a six member Disincorporation Commission consisting of three village members and three township members. You can view a copy of the plan on the Onekama website.
If passed, the village government would be dissolved and the township board would be the sole governing body. A 5-mill property tax assessment on village taxpayers would be eliminated and the community would see thousands of dollars in administrative savings. If passed, this plan would also be the first consolidation of this kind to ever happen in Michigan.
As part of the plan, village history would be preserved and the Village offices may be converted into a museum to house that history.
