Lansing teen hit by car driven by off-duty officer

MASON COUNTY -- 5:30 a.m. Monday update:
A 14 year-old boy is dead after he was hit by an off-duty Mason County Sheriff's Corrections Officer near Ludington.
According to Mason County Undersheriff Thomas Trenner 14-year-old Darius VanBrook from Lansing was struck at about 5:40 am Sunday morning after he exited a van on US-10 near Pere Marquette Highway.
Michael Hays is the driver who hit the teen. He is a part-time corrections officer, who had apparently just finished his shift at the county jail.
The Undersheriff says that the officer never saw the teen. The Michigan State Police is investigating the accident.
