In 2010 the Supreme Court ruled that all corporations, non-profits and unions were people according to the 1st Amendment. That government was not allowed to place limits on corporate spending for political purposes.
And it is that ruling that the grassroots group, Move to Amend wants to change. A disciple of that movement, David Cobb outlined his groups vision to some five hundred supporters at Milliken Auditorium Wednesday night.
"Move to amend is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic coalition of groups and individuals from across the country, who have come together with a singular purpose of demanding an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. To make it clear that corporations are not persons, corporations do not have constitutional rights and money is not speech. We the people have the right to govern ourselves,"said Cobb.
The move to amend is forming around some forty states including Michigan. There quest to change to amend the first Amendment seems to be crossing party lines.
Elk Rapids Tea Party Chairman is also in favor of the movement. "It takes the citizens out of the loop. You know our little fifty dollar, one hundred dollar contributions don't speak anywhere near as loudly as some guy two blocks down from the capitol building with a million and a half bucks to spread around in his pocket."
Derek Bailey Democratic Canidate for Michigan's First Congressional District was also in attendance. "For me something for us to look at as citizens is understanding what our rights are as outlined and prescribed in the United States Constitution.
"Voting alone is not going to give us the change we need," added Cobb.
This grassroots organization wants to get this issue on the ballot for 2012.
"Voters will have the opportunity to vote. Do you believe we should amend the constitution to abolish corporate constitutional rights and establish that money is not speech? We need to politicize this issue at the local level and move from the grass roots up to the country, then to the state then ultimately to congress."
