Unemployment rates drop across the state

LANSING (AP) -- Unemployment rates are lowering in all 17 major Michigan labor markets. Mackinac  County has the lowest county-wide unemployment rate in the state.

The figures for October were released Tuesday by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget, and they reflect seasonal reductions in the workforce.

The statewide unadjusted jobless rate was 9.2 percent compared with 10.1 percent in September.

Rates range from a low of 5.7 percent in the Ann Arbor region to a high of 10.8 percent in the Detroit region. The Detroit region's rate was 12.2 percent in October 2010.

Eighty of Michigan's 83 counties had lower unemployment rates in October.

Mackinac County has the lowest county rate at 5 percent, followed by Washtenaw and Clinton at 5.7 percent. Baraga County has the highest at 15.1 percent.

Below is a complete list of Michigan markets and their unemployment rates:

- Ann Arbor, 5.7 percent, compared with 6.6 percent.

- Battle Creek, 7.5 percent, compared with 8.6 percent.

- Bay City, 7.9 percent, compared with 8.8 percent.

- Detroit-Warren-Livonia, 10.8 percent, compared with 11.7 percent.

- Flint, 9.4 percent, compared with 10.6 percent.

- Grand Rapids-Wyoming, 7.1 percent, compared with 7.9 percent.

- Holland-Grand Haven, 7 percent, compared with 7.8 percent.

- Jackson, 8.4 percent, compared with 9.5 percent.

- Kalamazoo-Portage, 7.3 percent, compared with 8.3 percent.

- Lansing-East Lansing, 6.7 percent, compared with 7.7 percent.

- Monroe, 8.1 percent, compared with 9.2 percent.

- Muskegon-Norton Shores, 9 percent, compared with 10 percent.

- Niles-Benton Harbor, 8.4 percent, compared with 9.5 percent.

- Saginaw-Saginaw Township North, 8.1 percent, compared with 9.1 percent.

- Upper Peninsula, 7.9 percent, compared with 8.8 percent.

- Northeast Lower Michigan, 10.1 percent, compared with 10.7 percent.

- Northwest Lower Michigan, 9.1 percent, compared with 9.9 percent.
