TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department responded to a structure fire just before 11 o'clock this morning on W. Silver Lake Road.
When they arrived flames and smoke were shooting out of a large garage behind a home. Asst. Fire Chief Terry Flynn tells 7&4 News that because their fire station is so close to the home, they were able to put the fire out quickly.
The fire started because cardboard boxes were too close to a hot wood burning stove. Once the boxes caught on fire a nearby wood pile also caught on fire. Firefighters say there is significant damage to the building.
Chief Flynn says before he arrived he thought the fire may be cooking related since Thanksgiving Day has the highest number of cooking-related fires out of any other day of the year.
