WEXFORD CO., MI -- A popular snowmobile tunnel in Wexford County has gone dark for good after the US Forest Service had concerns about its safety and structural integrity.

Before this year, the two-lane under-road crossing on 12 Road near the Caberfae Ski and Golf Resort was a popular spot for snowmobilers, but with a new road constructed and safety concerns with the tunnel, the Forest Service decided to get rid of it and go with a road crossing instead.

Pete Finch, a local business owner, says the tunnel will be missed.

"It definitely was a point of interest for snowmobilers in the area, I think a lot of people liked this are with that tunnel, and seeing it gone is going to be sad for a lot of people and I'm also concerned for the safety hazards that could be created," said snowmobile rider Pete Finch.

He says in the winter the road gets busy with people visiting the area to ski or snowmobile.

Another reason the tunnel was axed is the inability to groom the trails underneath.
