Coast Guard crews suspended their search for a missing boater in Grand Traverse Bay.

Jay Farr, 59, of Northport left work around 8 a.m. Saturday and has not been seen since. He reportedly got onto his 10-foot dinghy near Leelanau peninsula and was traveling to North Point Marina to get to his sailboat.

The Coast Guard was called by the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office to search the area.   A Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Traverse City and a rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Charlevoix took part in the search effort throughout the weekend.

Sunday morning, the dinghy, believed to belong to Farr, was spotted by the helicopter crew on the east side of Grand Traverse Bay.   Crews saw no other sign of Farr and suspended the search around 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Coast Guard suspends a search and rescue case with extremely great care and deliberation. After a probable search area is saturated several times with a maximum number of assets, resources and crew effort, and a person missing is still not located, a decision is made to suspend a case.
