Cash n Carry Flooring is the first zero waste carpet store in Michigan.
TRAVERSE CITY -- UpNorthLive's Facebook fans voted to hear more about a local business joining the green movement by recycling old carpet.
Cash n Carry Flooring is the first zero waste carpet store in Michigan. To earn the title, the business is recycling carpet and padding from both its commercial and residential customers.
Tim Hyland, owner of Cash n Carry Flooring says he connected with Carpet Landfill Elimination and Recycling (CLEAR), which is based in Milwaukee, WI. The two businesses are working together by bringing the used carpeting to CLEAR's West Michigan plant for recycling.
Cash n Carry collects all carpeting and padding from customers for a minimal fee at its Traverse City store. The carpet store just joined the Michigan Green Consortium as it continues to learn more about zero waste business.
Four percent of all waste in U.S. landfills is carpet, according to CalRecycle. The Carpet America Recovery Effort reports only 4.6 percent of all carpeting is currently being recycled.
