Man arrested for trying to kidnap woman on walking trail

The woman was on the Ludington pathway Saturday morning when she was approached.

LUDINGTON -- A Mason County man is charged with trying to kidnap a woman on a walking path.

The 36-year-old woman was approached by the man Saturday around 10:12 a.m. on the Cartier Pathway in Ludington.  The woman told police after she was approached she kept walking and the man grabbed her.  She broke free and ran for help.

A short time later Mason-Oceana 911 received information directing the Ludington Police Department and Mason County Sheriff's Deputies to a man matching the description of the suspect.

The suspect, Richard Vodvarka, 41, of Ludington was arrested.  He is facing Attempted Kidnapping, Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct and Habitual Offender charges.

Vodvarka is being held on a $750,000. bond  He is listed on the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry as living at 1008 North James St., Ludington, MI.

Police credit this case being resolved quickly because of the awareness and quick actions of the victim.
