In one of the most aggressive government efforts to address child obesity, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder wants doctors to monitor body weight of children and put the data in a state registry.

Dr. Tina Smith, a pediatrician at Kids Creek Children's Clinic in Traverse City says in order for the data to be used for a study, a follow-up would need to be done.

"It could be great, or it could be extra work that doesn't lead to anything. We already collect BMI data and we are already working with patients so that part doesn't change. Putting information into a registry is an extra step." says Dr. Smith

Even though the child's identity would remain anonymous, some parents think it’s an invasion of privacy.

Greg Bergstrom, a local dad says, "I don't think the state should be collecting that kind of information on anybody, especially children."

Doctors say no matter what happens in Lansing, all kids need to work on a healthier life style.
