The Census Bureau reports that about 46.2 million people were in poverty in 2010--the highest level since 1983.

That equals out to nearly one in six people living in poverty in the U.S..  At the time the unemployment rate averaged about 9.6 percent.  The poverty line in 2010 was $22,113 per year for a family of four.

Also, the number of people without health insurance reached a new high, nearly 50 million people. Health insurance losses were mainly due to employees who lost company-provided health insurance.  The main provisions of president obama's health care plan won't take effect until 2014.
