A Charlevoix Co. Inmate has been locked up for 8 months, and took it upon himself to learn to read
CHARLEVOIX, MI -- It has been an eight month life lesson for a Charlevoix County man who is locked up on drug charges.
We have the story of a man who has learned more than just the consequences of breaking the law.
Sometimes a success story at the tip of your tongue and in this case, that's exactly where it's at.
"I could maybe read “to, from, and,” but not a complete page, you know," said Brian Daubenspeck.
Daubenspeck has been behind bars for eight months and nine days for drug charges, but he didn't just wait for the time to expire, he took it upon himself to do something he's always wanted to do with a help of a tutor.
"It’s a good feeling when you're able to sit down and read something, you know, here I am, 50 years old, you know, going through this problem my whole life, so year, tremendously thrilled," said Daubenspeck, who said he had a problem learning how to read because he suffers from dyslexia.
Charlevoix County Sheriff Don Schneider says this is a great success story.
“We try to take people and send them out of this jail better than when we got them," said Sheriff Schneider. “Obviously he's leaving a better person, because with these tools, he can feel better about himself, and I think that came out."
And the tools will go a long ways for Daubenspeck and the journey starts tomorrow.
“Tomorrow I’m out," said a proud Daubenspeck.
Out a changed man, he says, in several different ways.
