TRAVERSE CITY -- Facebook fans of UpNorthLive voted Tuesday to hear more about how to volunteer their time in the family court system.
You can train to be a tutor, mentor and help monitor troubled children and teens for the Grand Traverse County Probate Court through a training session next month.
The idea is to help get troubled kids back on a track to success. Program organizers say this orientation is a chance to get familiarized with the ways you can help.
"Little taste of some of the skills they'll be applying, some communication skills and some different things on working with families and really it's to show them what we have and additional training comes once they're involved," explained Laura Shumate.
The training session will take place Monday, Oct. 3 from 5:30-8:00 PM. The session will concentrate on what the Probate and Family Court does and how volunteers can help accomplish the goals.
A second session will be held Oct. 4 from 5:30-8:00 PM. This session discusses communication and how to work with children and families.
If you want to pursue the volunteer service a third step will take place Oct. 11, which includes the swearing in of volunteers.
All training sessions will be held at the Volunteer Services Division Office-Hall of Justice, 280 Washington St., Traverse City.
You are asked to arrive before 5:15 PM to get through security, the entrance to the Hall of Justice will not be guaranteed after 5:15 PM.
