EAST JORDAN, MI -- Keep Lake Charlevoix debris-free!
East Jordan has launched a new program to help remind people who use the lake to not throw old fishing line into the waters.
Near the city's boat ramp, there's a new "Reel In and Recycle" canister to collect old mono-filament fishing line to keep it from cluttering the water.
Fishing line takes 500-years to break down, and it can jam boat propellers and wildlife can potentially get tangled with the line.
"This just reminds people, even if they don't have any use for it, that it's a really good idea that anything you take out on the lake, bring it back with you, and dispose of it correctly," said East Jordan City Manager Bob Anderson.
East Jordan's Marina is certified as a Michigan Clean Marina and he says he hopes this reminds anglers to be respectful to the waters and take the extra effort to keep the lake clean.
