LANSING, MI -- Thousands of college students need to find a new way to pay for their food this school year.

State leaders say they have removed about 30,000 students from Michigan's Food Assistance Program.

New federal guidelines were put in place this spring.

It's expected to bring about $75 million a year in savings.

The state says students must show "true need" to reap benefits from the program.

Michigan previously had created its own rules that made nearly all students eligible for aid that's commonly known as food stamps.
