GAYLORD, MI -- We’ve heard lawmakers going back and forth for weeks, but even with all this coverage, do you really know how all of this debt talk affects you?
With all of the talks about the debt ceiling, we downloaded an iPhone app that shows the current US debt. Then we hit Gaylord streets to see if people had an idea of how much the US owes.
"3 trillion? Oh my God, that's ridiculous. $14.5 trillion, that's astronomical, that's for sure," said an astounded Amanda Reed.
There's an app for that. Every tick of the clock, the national debt increases by the cost of a Corvette. USdebtclock.org shows the same thing, a second means another $60,000. The national debt for the United States is $14.5 trillion.
"I could probably buy Hawaii, I could buy Hawaii," laughed taxpayer Belinda Markell.
"I think we waited too long to address this issue," said taxpayer Jeri Reid.
And according to the debt clock website, it would cost every taxpayer $130,000-plus to erase the debt.
"This is ridiculous, our future's mortgaged, our grandkids, Washington’s out of control," said taxpayer Randy Markiewicz.
And with all of the talks in Washington of how to take care of this problem, people I talked to say it's time to get a hold of it.
"We’re really going down the wrong road, we need to bring things back and get America into an economically rich environment," said taxpayer Al Russo.
"The spending cuts that they're proposing not only need to be real, but they need to be made now, rather than 10 to 12 years from now," said taxpayer Mike Prendergast.
But until some type of deal is made, the clock keeps on ticking.
“We would never do this with our personal financed and spend like this out of our own pocket book," said Michelle Bailey.
It took you about one minute and 30 seconds to here all of those answers, and in that time, the national debt increased by $5.3 million. Concerning? You be the judge, because there's not an app for that.
Congress has until next Tuesday to come to an agreement about the US debt ceiling, which then needs to be signed by the President.
