GAYLORD, MI -- In our continuation of our series "Schools in Crisis," 7&4 news has learned that Gaylord Area Schools will terminate 19 custodians.
School leaders have voted to eliminate 11 full time and 8 part time positions.
The district's schools will now be cleaned by a private maintenance service out of Grand Rapids.
This change goes into effect this school year and the Gaylord Superintendent tells us the decision was made to save more than one-million dollars over three years.
Some of the workers may be hired on with the new cleaning company.
The Superintendent says this move also came down to Governor Snyder's five best financial practices plan in order to secure an additional $100 per pupil in next year's funding.
