CHIPPEWA CO. -- Two Chippewa County beaches are closed after tests reveal high levels of E.coli.

The Chippewa County Health Department closed Sugar Island Township Park on Sugar Island in Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday.  Brimley State Park in Brimley is also closed.

People should also avoid body contact with surface water at Sherman Park and the surrounding area.

The high level of bacteria (E.coli) is usually found after heavy rains in the area.

Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk for developing illnesses or infections after coming in contact with contaminated water.

The most common illness is gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and the intestines.  Symptoms include vomiting, headaches and fever.  Other symptoms can include ear, eye, nose and throat infections.

The Chippewa County Health Department will notify the public when the beaches reopen.
