TRAVERSE CITY --
Some parents at several Traverse City Area Public schools will be holding an outreach event Tuesday afternoon -- expressing to fellow parents the need to make our voices heard in Lansing.

PTO parents from TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis are spearheading efforts to make their voices heard in Lansing regarding the proposed budget cuts to education.

The group has organized an event for Tuesday called “Cut$ Hurt”, which will take place at TCAPS Montessori, and several other district schools the same day.

Dressed in red, The PTO will be handing out postcards and information sheets to parents during the afternoon school pick up period – distributing them in car lines and walk up areas.

The postcards are printed with the message “Cuts to Education Never Heal,” and will include a postage stamp and pre-addressed labels to local state legislators and the governor. It’s designed to be easy for parents to write their own message, and drop in the mail.

“We really want parents to know that their voices matter in Lansing,” said Jennifer Berkey, president of TCAPS Montessori PTO. “Sometimes it’s difficult for people to set aside the time to figure out how to contact their legislators, and so we want to make it simple for them. These cuts will have a tremendous impact to TCAPS schools, particularly because we are already one of the lowest funded districts in the state.”

TCAPS Montessori has also created a special web page where they provide parents with information on the budget issue, including contact information for key legislators.

They have shared this information with other district PTOs to help coordinate parent efforts.  More information can be found by CLICKING HERE.
